Installing Stone Veneer

For installation instructions we provide the stone veneer installation guide from the Masonry Veneer Manufacturers Association(MVMA). The MVMA was a driving force in the development of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specifications. You can download the installation specs below.

These instructions are updated regularly, you should also visit the MVMA website for the most recent version.

A quick note about ledgestone, also known as stacked stone: we do not recommend a mortar-less joint for these products. We believe that we are too far north, that there are too many freeze-thaw cycles for the stone to say on the wall ‘forever’. If you do want the mortar-less look you should use a good bonding agent. It is also helpful to create a joint that is raked out so that at least ½” of mortar is between the stone and the surface of your scratch coat.

Stone veneer is a cost-effective alternative to natural stone and can add a touch of elegance and style to any space. However, installing stone veneers requires skill and expertise. That's why it's essential to work with a contractor or local mason who has experience installing stone veneers. Here are some tips to help you find the right local masons or contractors:
  • Research potential contractors or masons: Look for contractors or masons who have experience with stone veneer installation. Check their websites, social media pages, and online reviews to get an idea of their work, quality, and reputation.
  • Get multiple quotes: Contact several contractors or masons and ask for quotes on the installation. This will help you compare prices and find a professional who fits your budget.
  • Check their credentials: Make sure the contractor or mason you choose is licensed and insured. This will protect you in case of any accidents or damages during the installation process.
  • Choose the right stone veneer: There are many types of stone veneer available, the professional you work with can help you select the right type of stone veneer for your project.
  • Prepare the surface: The surface where the stone veneer will be installed should be clean, level, and free of any loose debris. The professional you work with can help prepare the surface for installation.
  • Communicate clearly: Throughout the installation process, communicate clearly with the professional. Make sure you are both on the same page and that any issues or concerns are addressed promptly.
